Macetown 4WD Track – Managed Access System

New Zealand Four Wheel Drive Association (NZFWDA)

Information for Mining Claim Permit Holders

The Macetown Rd Managed Access System, including a locked gate, a CCTV camera system with online monitoring and number plate recognition capability, and an online permit system, became operatonal from 1st April 2026.

The permit system will send a padlock code for the locked gate with the permit by email.

Holders of Mining Claim Permits, and others authorised by them to work on their claim, are eligible for permits at no charge for trips to and from the claim site for mining purposes.

To gain access to a Mining Claim Permit Holder free permit, Mining Claim Permit Holders and their authorised persons are asked to complete an online pre‑registration form.

Those who have pre‑registered will receive an email with information and a link to register directly on the online permit system. Once registered, an administrator will assign Mining Claim Permit Holder access permits to your profile with no fees.

Using the Permit System

As the gate code will change frequently, Mining Claim Permit Holders must use the online permit system each time they wish to drive past the locked gate to obtain the current gate code.

Permits can be applied for online in advance or on the day of travel at https://permit.nzfwda.org.nz or by using the QR code displayed on signage on the track. There are two signs: one at the start of the track and a second approximately 500 metres into the track.

To gain a permit with no additional charge, you will need to log in to the permit system, complete the requested details, and submit the application. The application form is abbreviated and some fields may be pre‑populated to speed up the process.

For advance permits, the gate code will be sent to your email within 24 hours of your stated start date and time. For same‑day permits, the gate code will be sent shortly after submitting the request.

At the Gate

At the gate, you must unlock the combination padlock using the gate code provided. After passing through the gate, you must close the gate and lock the padlock, turning the combination dials away from the current gate code numbers.

The gate codes must be kept confidential. Permit holders must not share gate codes or allow other vehicles or motorcycles to pass through the gate behind them.

Optional Donation to Support the Annual Work Programme

Access for Mining Claim Permit Holders is free of charge. The Macetown Road 4WD Access Advisory Group has incurred costs developing the permit system to incorporate free access permits for Mining Claim Permit Holders.

The group estimates that up to $18,000 is required each year to support the annual work programme of track inspections, maintenance, and safety improvements, and to build a contingency fund in the event of a significant slip.

Donations are needed in addition to permit fees to fund the annual work programme for the benefit of all users. All donations are gratefully received.

We appreciate the donations already received and respectfully ask claim holders who have not yet made a donation to consider doing so.

Donations can be made to the Arrowtown Charitable Trust’s Macetown Rd Access account at BNZ Bank.
